New Video: Behind-the-Scenes Look at Being an Integrator

For many Integrators, it can be lonely at the top. The role is often a thankless job that’s done behind the scenes. There can be a lot of confusion about what exactly your role is— are you an executive assistant? A COO? Something else? Behind-the-Scenes with an Integrator

What’s the most challenging aspect of the Integrator role?

Keeping the Visionary focused. The Visionary has a tendency to have a lot of big ideas that they want to execute and implement. I need to keep the organization focused on the highest priorities.

What do you love about being an Integrator?

Wrangling in the Visionary. (Yes, really!) 

How do you keep everyone ‘rowing in the same direction’?

Traction Tools does this in a myriad of ways. Everybody has access to our V/TO. Everybody gets to see what we’re doing on a weekly, quarterly, annual, 3-year, and 10-year basis. We also do a quarterly State-of-the-Company Address. 

What does the Visionary and Integrator relationship look like to you?

We maintain a Meeting Pulse, where we’re connecting on a personal level, making sure we’re aligned, that we’re thinking the same thing. The Visionary has a free opportunity to share his ideas without distracting the rest of the organization. 

Any advice for other people thinking about becoming an Integrator?

The Integrator role is sometimes the most thankless role in the company. People don’t see all of that work that goes on behind the scenes, so you have to be okay with that. 

Identify what your strengths and weaknesses are. Read Rocket Fuel, do the assessments. I scored very high on the Integrator skill set, so I knew early on that I was going to be okay. I’m a servant-leader.

Any advice for leading the leaders as an Integrator?

Leadership is about being their champion, their coach, the cheerleader of your team. Management is about providing the tools and resources that people need. People are more open to coaching when you’ve invested in them as people.

How has Traction Tools helped you become a stronger Integrator?

Traction Tools allows you insight into what’s going on farther down into the organization. You can see what’s on your team’s Scorecard and you can see what’s on the Issues List. You can see if people’s Rocks are on-track or off-track. It gives me a really good overview of what’s actually going on in the day-to-day.
