Friendly Stranger’s Gift Blesses Lives of Hungry Kids

Do Good TAThe Talent Acquisition Team at XANT participated in a service project this week. We gathered in the morning and assembled 175 lunches for preschool-age children in Salt Lake City’s The Road Home – a homeless shelter that looks out for families that typically go without meals. Once the children are fed, any extra lunches go to hungry siblings and/or parents.

The team raised the necessary funds and purchased the food for the sack lunches. Each sack lunch consisted of a sandwich (peanut butter and jelly, or peanut butter and honey, or turkey), two oranges, a bag of chips, a bag of cookies, a fruit snack, and a bottled water. We also donated supplies to their pantry: seven jars of peanut butter, 4 jars of jelly, and 250 sandwich bags.

While shopping for the food, we met a good Samaritan who inquired about our motive. After hearing that we were shopping for others in need, he quickly ran to his bank and withdrew some money without telling us. As we were checking out, he came back into the store and handed me an envelope with $500 cash and asked us if we would include it in our donation. He mentioned that he was new to the area and wanted to donate to a worthy cause this year but hadn’t found one yet.

I’m grateful for this selfless team and their willingness to do good. I am humbled at their generosity this holiday season, and their speed to help others in need. I hope that I can think of others first and be quick to give – not just during this holiday season, but for the entire year to come – following the example of this friendly stranger.
